Flanagan’s best work has a way of blending the emotional and the supernatural—things go bump in the hearts and minds of his characters as much as in the darkened hallways—and that makes him a good fit for a book that needed an emotional touch to work as a film. I liked seeing more about the shining abilities and the whole world of psychic powers, it looks great visually, and it's got strong enough themes that carry from the original. For example the new cult member Andi is sort of thrown in as something of an audience surrogate and gets a decent amount of focus, but then mostly just falls to the wayside and it feels a little awkward. 2:24 I liked how Abra isn’t just a scared victim to be rescued by Dan. With Kubrick-like attention to detail, Flanagan plays with images and themes we remember, but always with different outcomes. The filmmaker stays respectful to both King and Kubrick which wouldn't have been an easy feat considering King's dislike for Kubrick's film. Some fans of “The Shining” will consider this sacrilegious, some will find it playful and nostalgic. Abra's innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before-at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past.
