The campground is small and nestled in the woods at the base/end of Needles Highway and walking distance to Sylvan Lake (trail in the woods along the road) The campground is set into a hillside giving some nice separation between sites and areas of the campground. RV campers will get a chance to know their neighbors, as the sites are nestled in nice and cozy with each other, whereas tent campers will be a little more removed and remote. BE AWARE If you are pulling a camper... You need to come in via Hwy 89 from the south (Sylvan Lake Road) DO NOT take Hwy 87.... we came in via 87 from the North thinking the tunnels, switch backs etc did not start until after/East of the Lake & Campground ... while that is mostly true there are a few switch backs and one tunnel to the north... we did manage to fit but just barely! The park also features onsite washrooms which include showers. The Tatanka theater provides activities and one night we stayed there was live music to enjoy. The junction of Highway16A and Highway 89 is located on the east side of the City of Custer, SD.Sites are close together and are not good for large tents or RVs over 27 feet.Sylvan Lake Lodge offers a restaurant, lounge, a general store, hiking trails, water sports and breathtaking views of Harney Peak.Located 1/4 mile from Sylvan Lake off of SD Highway 87 North (Needles Highway). There are electric hookups and some spots have full or partial shade, ours did not. We stayed at Sylvan Lake Campground Sept 2016 and had an absolute blast. There are over 50 spaces for tents or trailers or RVS. We pull a 24 foot travel trailer that expands to 30 ft when set up and there are a few sites that fit us and maybe a unit a bit bigger there... but not many. The campground is worth going to although most people go to Sylvan Lake. We stayed two nights and three days at Game Lodge Campground. We do some camping and have basic gear, but we are definitely not hard-core. The camp host was well informed and full of hospitality. Jarvis Bay is a family friendly campground with some playgrounds for the kids and an interconnected trail system perfect for biking or hiking. A 50% deposits is required to hold reservations and are no longer refundable 14 days prior to check –in date. Sylvan Lake Campground is a great place to cool off in the summer.
