The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and trail running and is best used from April until November. This was in early May 2019 btwMore like a stroll with short, steep spots. The area surrounding the Reservoir is prime for Whale Rock Dam was built in 1961, creating a 40,662 acre foot resevoir. No shade, so wear a sturdy hat & apply the sunscreen. The lake is fed from Old Creek and Cottontail Creek at two northern points. The trail is not well marked and seams to be a lot of alternative ways, steep shortcut or go around the hill. We did encounter a small rattlesnake. I went in the gate to down path to the right. Not worth it for me though. And the entrance is down from the road so it's kind of hard to see. The lake is surrounded by grassy rolling holls.Whale Rock Reservoir is open to the public during the trout fishing season. Stayed on wide trail/road and no problem with ticks in April. Whale Rock Trail is a hike like no other and you’re going to want to travel down this path as soon as you can.
I imagine it would be hot in the summer months - there is no shade. And I only did half the hike. Easy walk along the shoreline. It's $2 a person and when you go in you fill out the form to hike around.

They just hang in clusters on the short weeds on the trail.The trail was fine and the reservoir is impressive, but the ticks are a real problem. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.Tick city right now. My husband said it's a good fishing spot, so bring a pole if you like to do that. Lots of birds and wildflowers still very abundant here in June.We went to fish, but ended up hiking after no bites. I put walking as the activity instead of hiking because the path is pretty smooth and easy and well maintained. Turn left up the sandstone slickrock and follow the cairn-lined track up the back of Whale … You can even see morro rock and cayucos.Ticks! Daily access fee is $2 and goes to support the upkeep of the public access area.It was a hot day but a nice hike around the reservoir. I pulled off at minimum 20 ticks off my dog and 5 off myself. I was on the trail for 10 min and I pass a fisherman who was carrying his dog back to his car, he said he just pulled 20 ticks off his dog.
