I built costumes for years in the costume shop of an Equity theatre and everyone used "stitcher." Apparently, the word "sewist" appeared Jan. 1, 1964, in the Annals of Science, Volume 18, British Society for the History of Science. I hate sewist and seamstress, and to be honest, I'm really not crazy about stitcher.
